Misconception Around “एक ही तो जिंदगी है”

To enjoy material pleasure, people often say, “एक ही तो जिंदगी है”, इसे मजे से जियो। Translated as: We live only once, live it with fun. Continuing with some popular quotations; “Live your life at the fullest”. “Don’t regret doing anything you want”. “Life is too short to regret, just smile and move on”. “Life is not going to be there again”. While forgetting that such a life has been gone many times, they don’t even have any idea what they did in those lives. The good thing is, they can know what they should do in this life. Unfortunately, most of them are not even interested in knowing. Doing anything is beyond imagination for them.

“एक ही तो जिंदगी है” as an Opportunity

Contrary to the first ideology, there is another set of people who take the proverb, “एक ही तो जिंदगी है” as an opportunity. Such people have less interest in worldly desires, sometimes no interest at all. Because they know such a rare opportunity may never come again. They consider if “एक ही तो जिंदगी है”, then why not utilize it. The intelligent is one who knows that human life is not meant to be wasted. His mind guides him as such: this could be the one fortunate life which can take him to the path of liberation. So, he won’t take all the present material pleasures for granted and fix his mind on the Supreme God. Such a person is exceptional, as the Bhagwat Gita stated:

मनुष्याणां सहस्रेषु कश्चिद्यतति सिद्धये ।
यततामपि सिद्धानां कश्चिन्मां वेत्ति तत्त्वत: ॥ – Bg 7.3

Translation: Out of many thousands among men, one may endeavor for perfection, and of those who have achieved perfection, hardly one knows Me (Shri Krishna) in truth.

While keeping this in mind, he always tries to get closer to Krishna. He always thinks of his and others’ welfare. So, he engages himself in the service of Krishna and eagerly strives to help others to do the same. This way, he takes the full benefit of his human life and performs every necessary duty that can liberate him from the cycle of birth and death.

Human Life: A Rare Birth

Similar to the second ideology, an extended vision is that human life is a rare birth. Of all the species that exist or are extinct, human life is the rarest to get. The accumulated good karma of a soul from many births and the mercy of Krishna takes it to human life. Of course, it is not given to be wasted. The human is the only kind of species that gets a chance to practice Bhakti, associate with devotees, reading and understanding scriptures, and most importantly, to do any kind of austerity under the service of Shri Krishna. No other species doesn’t have any such golden opportunity. It could be said that human life is the only life that can take out the soul from this material world.

Human birth is indeed a great blessing and an opportunity, not to be frittered away in aimless pursuits. But to fight against the power of Maya is very difficult and most of us get swept away in its wake.

Your blogs will never disappoint when it comes to spiritual and guiding information. I truly believe we all have this life as a special opportunity to show ourselves and to immerse in Krishna Bhakti. As a strong believer in “Naham Karta Hari Karta, Hari Karta Hi Kevalam”: You are not the performer, someone is performing through you; and the one who is performing through you is the cosmic self, Hari (VISHNU).

    Hare Krishna…!!!!
